‘Haruyuki Yokoyama (Producer / Architect) from Kanagawa, Japan was originally inspired by electronic music from the mid 90’s. His first musical experiences came from starting an electronic band with some talented friends, and in 1998, his solo electronic music productions began.

After moving to Los Angeles in 1999, he studied Architecture, but his passion for electronic music continued. In 2003, he returned to his native homeland of Japan to live in Tokyo, where he continues to create his own take on minimal techno.’

Today we present you his debut ep on our label. ‘Error’ is a very creatively assembled piece of art. Haruyuki presents his very own style of minimal for you to enjoy. Vocal cuts emerging out of freaky grooves carefully put together into a unique musical structure. Listen to these joyfully diassembled fragments of samples and enjoy beeing left in syntax error.

‘Nothing’ is the sound of a brooding monster lurking around the corner. Will it eat your dog? Probably, cuz she’s covered in tabasco and this mexican has an appetite for perros! tasty morsels of vintage industrial samples pepper the abstracted techno rhythm with a nice acidic drip overhead.

Now, Miskate ain’t afraid of no monster. She’s devised a plan to lure the creature onto the floor and shake his ass off with a stomping rendition of ‘Nothing’. Hear that dog? Yeah, she’s having it too!

Sometimes you feel like doing the opposite, like making minimal techno. Nothing wrong with it, it’s just that everyone else is whipping out the sausage and banging on the bongos in the same way. Go in reverse.

Myspace can be a pretty hairy land to navigate. So is tom’s back. On this track, we explore the nether regions of the world’s most popular guy while he takes a picture of himself in the mirror. Aw tom, so loveable…

From Argentina with love…Der Argentinier Guti ist mit Sicherheit ein Ausnahmetalent unter den heutigen Newcomern der elektronischen Szene. Nach einer Karriere als Pianist zweier Argentinischen Rockbands widmet sich das Multitalent seit einiger Zeit seiner großen Leidenschaft…der elektronischen Musik. Wir haben Ihm einige Fragen zu seinen Projekten, der Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft gestellt.

Du lebst momentan in Argentinien und bist auf dem besten Wege eine feste Größe im internationalen Geschäft zu werden. Ist es deiner Meinung nach schwerer soweit zu kommen wenn man nicht aus einem der „führenden“ Länder der elektronischen Szene kommt?

Ich kann nicht genau sagen ob es schwieriger ist oder nicht, weil ich viel auf Tour bin und eigentlich nirgendwo richtig lebe. Ich denke heute geht es mehr denn je um die Musik. Es gibt weltweit Talente und es werden immer neue und aufregende Künstler gesucht die frische Tracks rausbringen. Für mich war es unglaublich als große Namen wie Ricardo Villalobos, Loco Dice, Luciano oder Marco Carola angefangen haben meine Musik zu spielen, weil das der Punkt war wo mit klar wurde das damit quasi die ganze Welt anfängt meine Musik zu hören. Wenn du dein Ding durchziehst und respektvoll bist ist es glaube ich relativ egal woher man kommt. Es fängt dann an von alleine zu laufen. Dann kommt alles nach und nach denn im Endeffekt dreht sich ja alles um die Musik.

Waren Kontakte die du in Südamerika geknüpft hast auch schon hilfreich bei deinem Erfolg oder kam der große Schub durch deine Aufenthalte in Europa?

Meine erste Tour in Europa war so unglaublich wichtig für mich, weil ich eine neue Welt, neue Künstler, eine neue Szene und die Kultur entdecken konnte. Aber vor allem der Kontakt zu Damian Schwartz bedeutet mir sehr viel, weil er mich musikalisch frei entfalten lässt. Ich arbeitete mit ihm in seinem Studio in Madrid, wir sprachen über das Leben, die Musik und hatten so viel Spaß miteinander. Ich lernte viel von ihm und unsere Zusammenarbeit lief total locker und unkompliziert ab. Und vor einigen Monaten ist ein Release von uns auf Raum Musik erschienen. Das ist schon Wahnsinn. Ich hatte das Glück die richtigen Leute zu treffen von denen ich lernte wie Paco (Osuna), Damian (Schwartz) und jetzt Loco Dice oder Frederico Molinari. Liebenswerte Menschen die sich in dieser Musikwelt gut auskennen. Aber eigentlich ist die Musik ein sehr persönlicher Trip für mich, der auf Aktion und Reaktion und verschiedenen Einflüssen basiert. Musik war schon immer mein Leben und beim Reisen bekomme ich den Input um meinen Sound zu entwickeln und die verschiedene Szenen und Kulturen auf die ich immer wieder treffe geben mir den nötigen Input.

Du machst ausschließlich Live Acts bei deinen Auftritten. Warum hast du nie mit dem Djing angefangen und was ist bei Live Performances der besondere Reiz für dich?

Als Musiker ist es für mich normal Live zu performen. Es gibt mir die Möglichkeit mich frei zu fühlen und eine besondere Verbindung zu meiner Musik herzustellen. Vielleicht fange ich bald das Auflegen an, aber ich fühle, dass ich eigentlich noch eine Menge durch meine eigene Musik ausdrücken muss.

Im Gegenteil zu vielen deiner Kollegen hast du einen sehr musikalischen Hintergrund und spielst auch immer noch Piano in einer Band in Argentinien. Erzähl uns etwas darüber

In erster Linie bin ich Pianist. Ich bin quasi damit aufgewachsen und spielte die letzten zehn Jahre in zwei großen Rock Bands, die große Stadien füllten. Das ist schon irgendwie verrückt, aber definitiv ein Teil von mir.

Wie kam dein Interesse zur elektronischen Musik und inwiefern hilft dir dein musikalischer Werdegang beim Produzieren?

Vielleicht wuchs mein Interesse mit dem Jazz Projekt das ich vor zehn Jahren mit einigen Freunden in Buenos Aires ins Leben rief, wo wir Jazz Improvisationen mit Beat machten. Aber ich glaube, dass mein Interesse zur elektronischen Musik durch das Tanzen und Feiern kam. Ich erinner mich noch gerne an die Partys in Argentinien wo ich mit meinen Freunden eine Menge Spaß hatte. Ich weiß nicht ob meine musikalische Vergangenheit mir hilft oder nicht. Für mich gibt es nur diese Art Musik zu machen. Ich lass mich da einfach treiben weil ich Musik nicht in der Theorie betrachte. Sie verkörpert für mich Energie, Farben, Stimmungen und Gefühle. Ich versuche immer möglichst unvoreingenommen und planlos an das produzieren zu gehen. Bei meiner letzten Veröffentlichung zum Beispiel war ohne Klavier, was für mich in der Tat ein wenig ungewöhnlich ist. Aber so ist das eben. Die Musik entwickelt und verändert sich die ganze Zeit.

Was für Veröffentlichungen können wir von dir in Zukunft erwarten und wie würdest du deinen Stil beschreiben?

Ich bin super glücklich über meine erste Doppel 12’ die im August auf Desolat rauskommt. Die Arbeit mit Loco Dice, Martin Buttrich und allen Leuten da war unglaublich. Dann kommt bald noch eine weitere Raum…Musik mit Damian Schwartz und eine weitere Veröffentlichung auf Desolat Ende dieses Jahres. Remixe und Kollabos mit einigen Artists und Freunden wie Delete für Viva Music (Steve Lawler‘s Label) und für Guy Gerber als Pianist. Dann noch ein Downtempo Projekt mit Alexi Delano, Tracks mit Shaun Reeves und Matt Tolfrey und wir haben gerade einen Track als La Merengue Downtempo Orchestra (Barem, Jorge Savoretti, Damian Schwartz, Guti) auf Mupa herausgebracht. Alles in allem kann man vom Stil her sagen, dass es handgemachter House und Techno mit Herz und Seele ist. Einfach rein hören!

Produzierst du nach einem besonderen Schema oder frei aus dem Bauch heraus? Woher nimmst du deine Inspiration wenn du an Tracks bastelst?

Ich bin das Chaos in Person. Ich mache einfach dass wonach ich mich in dem Moment fühle.

Legst du deinen Fokus erstmal auf dein Solo Projekt oder hast du noch weitere Projekte an denen du arbeitest?

Eigentlich beides gleichzeitig. Ich konzentriere mich auf meine Solo Projekte, liebe es aber die Musik mit Leuten zu teilen. Ich mache eine Platte mit Chichi Peralta, einen Latein amerikanischen Percussionist, der eine Legende bei uns ist. Ich wuchs mit seiner Musik auf und es geht wirklich ein Traum in Erfüllung mit ihm arbeiten zu dürfen. Natürlich werde ich auch weiterhin einige Sachen mit Damian Schwartz machen.

Du warst mittlerweile zwei Mal in Europa unterwegs. Was gefällt dir hier besonders und warum glaubst du ist gerade Deutschland eine Art Treffpunkt der elektronischen Szene?

Ich liebe die Leute und die Kultur hier. Elektronische Musik ist in Deutschland Kultur!

Hast du hier auch schon schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht? Ich persönlich habe das Gefühl das es manchmal für Artists die wirklich für die Musik Leben schwer ist einen Mittelweg zu finden in der schon teilweise kommerzialisierten Branche?

Bei mir gibt es nicht diesen “Ich möchte berühmt sein” Dj Vibe. Ich bin für die Musik hier, und wegen den Frauen (lacht). Manchmal ist es schon hart, aber es wird von Tag zu Tag einfacher.

So what about us, what have we been up to? We are extremely busy with preparing our vinly releases and belive me we got some really great artists lined up. Hopefully in times of virtualisation people still want to get a real vinyl? We’ll see about that.. However soon there will be a new free release by a new talent we spotted in spain – SeQ and a couple more digital releases by Den, Nick Dawson and finally our long awaited 2nd Various Artists Compilation. Sorry for the long delays, but we hope the cool releases will make up for the long waiting time ; )

Hello Easy Changes! Thank you so much for taking some time for us. Where are you at the moment?

- Hello, thank you for your interesting we always glad to answer on few nice question.
Last few months we were in Berlin from where we also was traveling around europe to play. now we came back to Moscow to do a visas for europe and also will try to get visas for United States because we plan to make a US tour in September. Actually we already tried to do it and we had booked for playing in 6 cities of US but made wrong few papers for embassy and they said no so now its time to get new chance. Its really nice to being here in Moscow to met a lot of friend to have fun with them at good parties and to wait summer that still didn’t came.

You are considered as a symbol for underground techno scene in Russia. Tell us, how is the situation there right now? Any talents, new ways in music or something like that?

- If we talk about parties and night life of Moscow i can say that we love it a lot. Most of time we even like parties here more than somewhere else. I think its because we have “arma17″ club who every month doing big parties with great line up everytime. Also our own promo group “nervmusic” doing more smaller but not less good events too. As about new talents or artists i have not too much to say. I mean if we talk about techno music, Moscow already have a few known artists but we are not really into his sound but i believe that now its time when people who are visiting those good events will impress from music that they are hear there and will surprise us his own tracks in near future and we know that its happen already. Otherwise we are proud of our friends who making good and professional instrumental hip-hop music they like a doing the same as we doing but in another place. We always support each others and its nice.

You have released EPs on labels such as Foundsound, Stock5 (will be out soon) or Multi vitamins. Do you feel some influences of these labels on your own work?

- Actually I think that we are not really into influences from any labels or artists. I mean of course it was good experience for us to work with labels such as foundsound, stock5 or multivitamins we also really like this labels and his artists and we are big friends with them but we think that we have unique sound that came not just only from influences of labels or music but from everything in our live for example from traveling, from parties, from friends, from childhood, from animals, from nature and even from accidents sometimes and of course some of it came from space especially from big hole in centre of our universe.

It has been almost 2 years since your last release (exc. remixes). Is there anything that you are working on right now?

- Sure. We have a lot of work now. First of all we are working hard on our own label called nervmusic. Our first nervmusic release is done and really soon it will be in the shops. It will be our own release with remix from known french minimal master cabanne. At the same time we are working on releases for Mean label run by our big friend cesare vs disorder that will out in september also our release for stock5 is almost done and must come this year and also one release for the label called 31337 records that now is releasing only digital but will run vinyl very soon and we’ll be his second release on vinyl. Of course as you understand we cant tell you everything but what we sure is that this year will be hot for us.

Of course. I’ve caught some information about founding your own label… Tell us about this plan…

- Yes its true we started vinyl label and to be honestly very happy of that cause we dreamed about it since we start to work as easy changes so it was like 4-5 years ago and now the dreams makes come true. As i told before first release will be our EP with remix from cabanne also we made a movie clip for track from this record called “gneedos” and you can find it somewhere in internet. Of course in plans we have more than just one record but we would like to keep this info in secret for a while. But we can say that in future we’ll release artists like Rudolf, Daze Maxim, Benjamin Fehr, Seuil and many others. So we are pretty sure that it will be massive business.

You play very often in Germany. Is there any difference between Moscow‘s and for ex. Berlin‘s parties?

- To be honestly not really often. We played in Berlin only at weekend, maria am ostbahnhoff, berghain kantine and klub der republik. Other time that we spend in europe we played in another countries like Italy, Spain, Switzerland and also other cities of Germany. As about differences btw Berlin and Moscow we can say that we think Berlin’s techno scene is old it work from 90’s or even 80’s, people partying like 5-6 days per week, almost every day there is some really good artist who play its really amazing!!! we love that. For example in Moscow people can partying only friday or saturday night and the really good line up on the event you can find only once or two times in month but its amazing too cause each event is big thing for people who sometimes really waiting it. so each cities have his own pluses and minuses.

Do you have any favorite DJ or producer now?

- Our references in producers is changing very often but we have few favorite artists thats never changed its Bruno Pronsato with all his projects especially Half Hawaii also Rudolf is on top at the moment also Pheek is really good now and many more… but we don’t have favorite DJ I don’t know why may be its because we are DJ’s too and our own choose in music is our favorite of course. I mean sometimes we are really enjoyed of DJing from different artists but we cant say who is the favorite.

What music equipment you are using for making tracks?

- We have few hardwares tools but actually we use it for live most of time and not so often for making tracks. We use Aleton Live 8 and Logic Pro 8 for arrangement but most of sounds we take from Native Instruments Reaktor 5. This tool is our favorite for sure without it i cant even imagine ourselves. Also we take a lot of samples from old vinyl records of 70’s or even 60’s like it do most of hip-hop musicians but we do it another way with using Reaktor and for another music as well. Also we love to use sounds from movies from kitchens from nature and from anything what can we record.

Where do you see Easy Changes in 5 years?

- We see millions places and ways where we can be. One thing we are pretty sure that it will be really good times for us and actually no matter where it will be. Our dream is to get possibilities to being everywhere you want cause now its always depends of our visas if we can get it we can be there if not well we cant…
Also we can clear imagine ourselves somewhere in Prague or in small Swiss town in the mountains as owners of small bar in a bar stage. That would be perfect.

In Prague? Glad to hear it ) … OK, next – What do you enjoy more – producing or DJing?

It’s different kind of enjoying. for example when you are producing music you enjoying every little sound you found. Then you feel like you track become more better and better every hour of your working and you enjoying that feeling. Then you feel pleasure when track is done and you enjoying it and then you show your work to your close friends and you see like his faces is changing like his lags is kicking your rhythm and its making you happy. But sometimes it takes a lot of time otherwise when you playing like a dj you can put one track and receive in this moment big vibe from people who dance and its enjoying too but for less time. our focus lies mainly in minimal techno, dub and experimental electronic music. however, every artist can work freely and is not bound to any limitations in his style. because we all have more or less the same taste, but all in different directions, the result is a perfect mix between floor filling, subtle minimal techno, and deep, slow experimental tracks.

the artist list keeps growing and 31337records presents a weekly radio shows on radio spiel-trieb (www.spiel-trieb.org) with lots of artists hosted by the label management. after one and a half years of work and 8 digital releases later, numerous requests for vinyl resulted in the planning of the first 4 vinyl releases which are scheduled for the beginning of 2009. for the future, own events are planned around germany and possibly other countries in europe.

So here is a little insight: the next release 1337-012 will be out the next couple weeks, then our very first vinyl will be from Sean O Neil aka Someone Else with remixes by non other than Miskate and Omar Salgado! So watch out, the upcoming weeks/months we’ll be back in action with new releases, new artists and probably brand new radio sessions.

These are exciting times for Berlin based label, 31337. Formed only in 2007 they have been steadily building up an excellent profile with solid releases and apperances from some from big names too like Someone Else and Remute. Their 2008-09 schedule promises to be a busy one with Dubkult amongst others lined up.They launched their dubby, minimal sound with the excellent compilation We are 31337! in may 2007 and the label is run by Stefan Klaas, Sebastian Guth and Philip Steger. We catch up with Stefan to ask him some questions….

First things first, is the name to be pronounced as numbers or as leet/elite?

Its meant as “leet” or “elite”, but many people use the numbers as they probably don’t know the meaning.

You seem to have taken a sensible route to starting a label by starting digital and then moving towards vinyl. was that always your intention or is it more that there was a demand for the vinyl releases?

I guess both. Of course we always thought of vinyl, but without any reputation its hard to compete in the music business. since many people get more involved in social networking we thought its best to start off digital. This was cost effective as we didn’t have a big budget to start with and it was good enough to get the name out. Also the netlabel scene is a very interesting place to meet new talented artists, label contacts and the like. There is a very strong community behind it and we will always keep supporting it, even when we go for vinyl, there will still be free mp3 releases.

Putting out vinyl is a risky business these days? Are you worried?

Not really worried, but very excited. We just think positive and go for it. Lets see what happens.

Getting artists like Remute and Someone Else to release on the label must have been amazing. Did you know them previously or was it just through other releases that you got in touch with them?

We knew all artists before the actual releases. Especially Denis (Remute) was really open minded to our project even tough we were a new label basically without any reputation. One year later we finally made it! We had several changes in the remixes so we kept delaying it. Sean (Someone Else) was also very kind and provided a great track for our very first release. We also planned the first vinyl with him as we love his music.

Who is the one artist that you would love to put out a record for?

I guess we all agree that would be Miskate or Cabanne.

Do you have any advice for someone starting out a netlabel?

Yes, avoid collecting agencies (such as GEMA in Germany) by all means and be sure to make contracts for every release!

Things seem to be going really well, do you have plans for the future or are you taking things one day at a time?

Indeed we get so much great support from all over the world, its really amazing and cool to see that people appreciate our efforts since we built this label not because of capitalism, but to have a platform for music that we personally love. Great to see that people enjoy our music!

What other labels or net labels do you like at the moment?

There are just too many good labels but i guess our favorites are still (un)Foundsound, Hello?Repeat, Perlon, Lessismore, Echocord, Scape, Multivitamins, Op.Disc or Minibar to name a few and as for netlabels we always like the Archipel stuff from our friend Pheek or Textone from Jay Haze.

What about the future of techno and dance music?

That’s not up to us really and we couldn’t care less. Some people already say minimal is dead, but we don’t go for the current hypes, we keep releasing what we like.

The original is a timeless Track full of rhythm and melodic soundscapes, just like you know Mr. Remute – straight club tracks. The first remix by 0×7f turns the track around into a bitter sweet melancholic direction, filled with field recordings and endless reverbs. The second remix by Alexis Cabrera & Guti is a hot techno track and made for the dancefloor. It includes jazzy influences with funky piano sounds. Great stuff from our two guys out of the heart of buenos aires. The last remix by Krlox is very dark and hypnotic. Repetitiv minimal techno with a deep sub line.

DEMO POLICY

1. Prepare

If you intend to send us a Demo, please listen closely to our releases. We get too many Demo’s which do not fit our style at all. This is simply a waste of your and our time, so first decide if your music really fits. If so, we are more than happy to listen to it!

2. Bio

Include a short (or large) Biography or a Press Kit if you have one. We would like to know who we deal with.

3. The Demo

Please send us at least 4 Tracks in 320bit mp3 quality. If you can do pre-mastering it would be nice, but of course we don’t judge on the mastering itself (Unless its very very bad). Do not send the files directly to our E-Mail address! Upload the files somewhere (i.e. rapidshare/sendspace) and send us the links.

4. Be patient

Of course you want to know as soon as possible, if we accept your submission or not, but please give us some time. We get a lot of Demo requests and we really listen closely to everything we get. We feel that you deserve our time, everyone equally! So every Demo will be verified by the Label Management and A&R people. We take the appropriate time to decide wether or not we would like to work with you.

5. Response

Due to the amount of demo requests we receive, we can not guarantee to give feedback on every single submission.

Because of the great competitiveness in his city, Anders Brøndum aka DJ Lab has built a high standard of quality for his sets and prooves technical skills in his own productions which he already put out on labels such as echocord or tic tac toe. Lab’s style took off as straight up banging minimalism but has developed considerably over the years. Today, his arsenal ranges from Detroit techno to minimal house and Dub. As long as it’s quality, it’s playable. From 1998-2000 he was a regular name in the Roskilde Festival lineup – playing for thousands and thousands of ravers at one of Europe’s largest music festivals.

By 2000 his credentials had brought him a monthly residence on the National Radio of Denmark. From 2004 and onwards, he’s upheld a residence at Copenhagen’s largest club, Vega – and since its opening in January 2005, internationally respected electronic club Culture Box has put Lab on the lineup numerous times.

The 30 something ep is packed with 3 beautiful Dub tracks starting off with “Libra” which was the favorite track of all of us including sean o’neil (someone else) on this ep, followed by “Spookers Dub” which is indeed a little spooky, but really unique and funky. The last track called “third shift” is very hypnotic and is more club oriented than the other tracks. all in all a great ep for everyone who is into minimal and dub!

We as Label Managers didn’t notice that the tracks Jak sent us include stolen loops. As we have been informed, that there are stolen loops, we took the release down immediately! Jak has also been kicked out of our Label, because we obviously dont support such behaviour. Our goal is to provide fresh original tracks and not copied works, thats why we are terribly sorry that this has happened to our label and friends at RaR. We promisse you to replace this “fake” Ep with a proper one full of original tracks as it used to be! We hope that you don’t judge us, because of this one artist. He fooled not only our label but a few more and this is really sad to see. And People please stop complaining that we as label managers didn’t know the “original” tracks, we simply cant follow every release on every label, so please dont bother us with such immature nonsense.
